Piano Trio Variations op.44 (Beethoven)
The Piano Trio Variations op. 44 in E flat major are a set of variations for the piano trio by Ludwig van Beethoven .
Emergence
After the first sketches from 1792, the Piano Variations op. 44 were created in 1800. It was published in 1804 by Hoffmeister & Kühnel.
To the music
The work is reminiscent of the Eroica Variations that were written almost at the same time : On the one hand, the themes of both works begin in unison , on the other hand, both of them contain the sequence of notes gabb-es (bars 15–22 in op. 44, bars 13–16 in the Eroica Variations ). This sequence of notes comes from the aria “Yes, I have to divorce myself” from the comic opera Das Rote Käppchen by Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf, composed in 1788 . As a result, according to musicologist Ares Wolf, it seems at least possible that the sounding of this sequence of notes, which represents a common cadence formula, is due to a coincidence in both of Beethoven's variations.
In the first seven variations, the melody takes a back seat in favor of harmony. In the bass of Variation 8, the melody returns like a recapitulation , which has the character of a caesura within the work.
