Johann Adam Schmidt
Johann Adam Schmidt (born October 12, 1759 in Aub near Würzburg , † February 19, 1809 in Vienna ) was a German surgeon and ophthalmologist .
Life
He studied at the Würzburg Bader and Surgeon School , went to Prague in 1778 and participated as a junior surgeon in the Bavarian army in a Moravian military camp in the War of the Bavarian Succession.In 1784, Johann Alexander von Brambilla , who later promoted him professionally, made him a senior surgeon or surgeon. Chief Medical Officer appointed. He later continued his studies under Joseph Barth (1745-1818) in Vienna, who trained him as an ophthalmologist. In 1789 he received his doctorate from the Josephs Academy in Vienna, where he completed his habilitation in 1789 and became a full professor in 1795.
In 1795 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
He published several groundbreaking medical works, including 1801 About Nachstaar and Iritis after cataract surgery . In 1802 he founded the ophthalmological library with Karl Gustav Himly (1772–1837) , the first German-language journal on ophthalmology.
From 1801 to 1809 Schmidt was Beethoven's preferred doctor , who consulted him particularly on the treatment of his hearing impairment. In 1804/05 Beethoven dedicated his Piano Trio in E flat major, Op. 38, an arrangement of his septet in E flat major, Op. 20 to him.
