August von Rothmund

August Rothmund , later von Rothmund (born August 1, 1830 in Volkach , † October 27, 1906 in Munich ), was a German ophthalmologist .

Life

August von Rothmund was the son of the surgeon Franz Christoph von Rothmund (1801-1891). In 1847 he completed his school education at the (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich . He studied at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and was active in the Corps Isaria in 1848 . In 1853 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . He switched to Albrecht von Graefe at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin . He then worked with Carl Ferdinand von Arlt at the German University in Prague and with Friedrich Jäger von Jaxtthal in Vienna. Returned to Munich in 1854, von Rothmund taught ophthalmology at the Ludwig Maximilians University. He was the head of the surgical polyclinic at the Reisingerianum .

Rothmund became an associate professor in 1859 and a full professor of ophthalmology in 1863 . For the academic year 1884/85 he was elected rector of the LMU. He was elected member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina in 1887. August von Rothmund retired in 1900 . His retirement home, the Villa Rothmund in Miesbach , was built in 1902 by Eugen Drollinger . The Rothmund-Thomson syndrome was first described in 1868 by August von Rothmund in the publication Ueber cataracten in connection with a peculiar skin degeneration .
