Franz Christoph von Rothmund

Franz Christoph Rothmund , from 1857 Ritter von Rothmund (born December 28, 1801 in Dettelbach , † November 30, 1891 in Munich ), was a German surgeon.

Life

Rothmund began studying philosophy and medicine in Würzburg . Von Doellinger, von Textor and Johann Lukas Schönlein were among his academic teachers here. In Berlin he completed his studies with Karl von Graefe . In 1823 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD. After his training, von Rothmund applied to the Miltenberg court . He became a medical officer in the small town in Lower Franconia. On May 14, 1829, he received the post of court doctor and went to Volkach . Here his salary was 450  florins and he was paid in kind. In the years to come Rothmund promoted the professionalization of medicine in the small town. During the cholera epidemic in 1835/1836 in particular , he tried to make things more hygienic. In 1843 von Rothmund was appointed professor and director of the 1st surgical department at the Munich Municipal Hospital . Here he tried out new treatment methods and was one of the first doctors to use ether anesthesia . From 1848 he took over the examination of young doctors as part of the Supreme Medical Committee. Von Rothmund worked as a military doctor in the wars of 1866 and 1870/1871 . As a result, he was ennobled and awarded several medals. In 1871 he was retired . Nevertheless, he published several articles in professional journals and journals. Von Rothmund died in 1891 at the age of 89. To this day he is considered the founder of modern surgery. The ophthalmologist August von Rothmund was his son.
