Julius Leopold Pagel

Julius Leopold Pagel (born  May 29, 1851 in Pollnow / Hinterpommern , †  January 30, 1912 in Berlin ) was a German doctor and medical historian.

Life

Julius Pagel studied medicine in Berlin . His teachers included E. Du Bois-Reymond , Rudolf Virchow and August Hirsch . After receiving his doctorate in 1875 with a thesis on the history of the Göttingen medical school in the 18th century , he first worked as a doctor for the Berlin city administration and established himself as a general practitioner in the city in 1876. In addition, he researched and taught history of medicine. He completed his habilitation in the history of medicine in 1891 . In 1898 Pagel was appointed adjunct professor at the Friedrich Wilhelms University . From 1901 he was an associate professor. In 1902 Ernst Schweninger received the chair in the history of medicine, which had been vacant since 1894 and had been hoped for by Pagel.

Julius Pagel was a member of the Wednesday Society .

His son Walter Pagel (1898–1983) was also a doctor (pathologist) and medical historian.
