Georg Maurer (doctor)

Georg Maurer (born May 29, 1909 in Munich , † July 4, 1980 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) was a German surgeon and local politician ( CSU ). He was a co-founder of the second medical faculty in Munich.

Life

Maurer saw the need to establish a second medical faculty in the state capital and did everything in his power to remove the objections and difficulties so that on September 14, 1967, the Faculty of Medicine at the Technische Hochschule am Klinikum rechts der Isar could be established, its Medical Director the surgeon was later. Maurer was also a member of the Munich city council from 1952 to 1972. Maurer became known beyond the German borders, especially in England , as he provided medical care to the survivors of the plane crash on February 6, 1958 in Munich and was able to save the life of the then Manchester United coach , Matt Busby , among other things . For this achievement, Maurer and his team were honored in England as the "Angels of Munich". On March 5, 1958, he was appointed Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II . From 1952 to 1972 he was a member of the Munich City Council as a member of the CSU and from 1952 to 1955 a member of the CSU state executive. He is the namesake of the Georg-Maurer Medal and Georg-Maurer-Strasse in Munich.
