After completing his training at the Rudolf Virchow Hospital , Siewert went to Göttingen in 1969 to join Hans-Jürgen Peiper . In 1982 he was appointed to Munich to succeed Georg Maurer . There he acted as medical director of the Klinikum rechts der Isar and taught general, visceral and transplant surgery as a full professor of surgery. He brought the clinic into the top group of German university hospitals .

After his retirement in Munich, Siewert held the post of Medical Director of the Heidelberg University Hospital from July 1, 2007 to November 2011 as the successor to Eike Martin (* 1944) . From March 2010 to November 2011 he was also acting medical director and chairman of the board of the Freiburg University Hospital . In November 2011 he moved regularly to Freiburg and until October 31, 2018 he held the post of Chief Medical Director of the Freiburg University Clinic.

Among other things, Siewert developed an operation to connect the esophagus and the small intestine ( esophagojejunoplication according to Siewert / Peiper) after a total surgical removal of the stomach . He also gave a classification of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus:

  • AEG I distal esophagus approx
  • AEG II Cardia - Approx
  • AEG III subcardiac gastric approx

Siewert has published numerous publications , monographs , manuals, and surgical guides.

Role in plagiarism proceedings against Hans-Hermann Dickhuth

As an expert in the habilitation committee of the University of Freiburg, Siewert had a decisive influence on the fact that the former medical director of sports medicine Hans-Hermann Dickhuth was withdrawn from his habilitation in 2013 because his habilitation thesis did not match several doctoral theses.

Allegations of plagiarism

In November 2014 it became known that Siewert's post-doctoral thesis, which was created in Göttingen, had uncited matches with the doctoral thesis of his former colleague and current President of the Association of Leading Hospital Doctors, Hans-Fred Weiser.

A committee of three appointed by the rector of the University of Freiburg at Siewert's request, after reviewing the habilitation thesis, found that there was "no initial suspicion of scientific misconduct". However, doubts were expressed about the neutrality of the three-party committee, since one of the members, Stefan Pollak, is directly subordinate to Siewert under service law and another member, Kerstin Krieglstein, was elected to the office of dean at Siewert's suggestion.

In contrast, the ombudsman of the University of Göttingen expressed "an initial suspicion of scientific misconduct" in a meeting in mid-January 2015. The investigation was closed on June 12, 2015, Siewert's writing was not objected to. Critics complained that it was measured with two different standards, according to research by the Handelsblatt , the acquittal is allegedly based on questionable evidence. However, the University of Göttingen refuses to publish the report, although Heyo K. Kroemer , Dean of the Medical Faculty of Göttingen, had declared that the result of the upcoming Göttingen clarification was to be "communicated transparently and comprehensibly".
