Werner Hohenberger

Werner Hohenberger (born July 3, 1948 in Helmbrechts , Hof district , Upper Franconia ) is a German surgeon , oncologist and cancer researcher. From 2008 to 2012 he was President of the German Cancer Society . 2013 to he heads the German Society for Coloproctology as President .

Live and act

Hohenberger studied medicine at the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen from 1967 to 1973 . This was followed by state exams and doctorates (1973) as well as license to practice medicine (1974) and habilitation (1984). His career began in 1975 as an assistant doctor and continued as a medical officer for military service in Germany and as a research assistant at the surgical clinic at the University Hospital Erlangen and at the Clinic for Visceral Surgery at the University of Bern .

From 1995 until his retirement in 2015, Hohenberger was director of the surgical clinic at the University Hospital Erlangen.

With his clinical and scientific activities, Hohenberger has made a decisive contribution to advancing cancer medicine . For this and for the development of so-called “multimodal therapies” in the treatment of colon cancer , he has received several science prizes and awards. According to cancer experts, this therapy includes a coordinated approach to treatment through surgery , chemotherapy and radiation, as well as close collaboration between the various medical disciplines. The aim of the procedure is to achieve the greatest possible effect against the tumor and to keep the side effects as low as possible.

In addition, in 2009 he described mesocolic excision and introduced it into the literature with the aim of standardizing the surgical treatment of colon cancer in line with modern cancer surgery, which is now recognized internationally as the leading surgical method as "Complete Mesocolic Excision - CME".
