prehistory

The area around Weinzierl has an old history. This can be demonstrated by the Gudenus Cave discovered in 1883 by Leopold Hacker , a Benedictine of the Göttweig Abbey . Researchers found that this cave, which was inhabited 70,000 years ago, is the oldest inhabited site in Lower Austria. In addition, an eagle bone , on which a drawing of a reindeer head can be seen, was found at this point , which is the oldest representation of animals in the entire room.

middle Ages

The oldest writings come from the 12th century. The earliest mentioned part of the municipality of Weinzierl is Nöhagen (1122), the latest Himberg (1309). At that time, noble families and monasteries owned the land. Weinzierl am Walde was owned by the Babenbergs , the Göttweig monastery and various princes. The Habsburgs subsequently took over the ownership of Weinzierl from the Babenbergers.

Population development
data according to Statistics Austria

Population development

With a population density of 29 inhabitants per square kilometer, the municipality is relatively sparsely populated (for comparison: Lower Austria has 83, Austria 98 inhabitants per square kilometer). As in most of the smaller towns in Lower Austria, there was a tendency to emigrate to the surrounding cities and to Vienna. The special thing about Weinzierl is that there has been a strong emigration since 1900.

The first census in 1869 recorded 1850 inhabitants. After that there was a big increase and in the census in 1900 already 1910 citizens could be counted, at the same time this is the highest level ever recorded. Since then the population has been falling rapidly: Weinzierl am Walde only had six years after the end of the Second World War 1556 inhabitants left. Ten years later, the population fell to less than 1500 inhabitants, and in the 2008 census it was even less than 1300 inhabitants. In spite of the rather good birth balance (comparison 1991 to 2001: +24), the main reason for this was the permanently negative migration balance (−30). Weinzierl's birth balance (+1.8%) is also higher than the values of the Krems-Land district (± 0%) and the federal state of Lower Austria (−0.5%). In terms of migration balance (−2.2%), however, the municipality is clearly below the values of the district (+3.5%) and the state (+ 5.4%).
