Wetzlas Castle (Lower Austria)
Wetzlas Castle

The Wetzlas Castle is a neo-classical mansion in the Lower Austrian town Wetzlas that with its outbuildings and an astronomical tower is connected to a three-sided enclosed building complex. The listed complex is surrounded by a park and a garden wall.

history

The former Meierhof was converted into a mansion around 1720–1725 by Baron Ignaz Philip von Ehrmanns, the owner of the Dobra estate . The astronomical tower and the palace garden were also laid out under the Ehrmanns. After frequent changes of ownership, Baron von Pereira-Arnstein was named as the owner in 1814. In 1842 Franz von Andrea bought the property and expanded it by adding floors and adding a chapel . But even after Franz von Andrea, the ownership structure often changed. In 1940 Wetzlas Castle was sold to the German Reich and incorporated into the Döllersheim military training area . After the end of the Second World War and after the occupation forces had withdrawn, the property came into the possession of the Republic of Austria , which in turn sold it to a private owner in 1964. At that time, the castle was already threatened with decay and had also been ravaged by arsonists several times . In 1991 it was bought by Hans Pretterebner and completely renovated. Since 2001 it has been operated as a youth hostel and holiday castle.

description

The elongated, two-storey building with a gabled central projection is structured on the ground floor by a continuous groove . The five-axis central projection has a pilaster structure on the upper floor and bears the coat of arms of Franz von Andrea on the gable . The upstream, wide driveway is bordered by a stone balustrade . The partially existing stucco ceilings in the interior probably date from the 19th century.

The chapel is on the west side of the castle. It is rectangular and has a retracted choir with a round apse in the south, a small roof turret with an onion helmet and arched and oval windows. The interior flat-roofed nave with sloping corners and the choir are groin-vaulted and have a circular pilaster structure. The vault of the choir is provided with a profiled transom. The ceiling painting is classical, as is the marble altar, which probably dates from the 19th century.

The astronomical tower dates from the second half of the 18th century and was built by the Ehrmanns family. The two-storey building with a banded basement has arched windows and a pilaster structure on the upper floor .

On the north side of the courtyard there are former stables with groin vaults above Tuscan columns, which were built at the end of the 18th / beginning of the 19th century. Parts of it were destroyed by arson in 1963.

Film set

Wetzlas Castle was used several times as a location for films and television series, for example in 1972 for the television series The Adventures of the Good Soldier Schwejk with Fritz Muliar and Heinz Marecek or for some scenes of the movie comedy Drei Herren with Karl Markovics , Karl Merkatz and Ottfried Fischer in the year 1998.
