Martinsberg is a market town with 1089 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Zwettl district in Lower Austria .
geography
Martinsberg is located in the southwestern part of the Waldviertel at the east end of the Weinsberger Forest . The area of the market town covers 33.75 square kilometers. 43.1 percent of the area is forested.

history
The community was first mentioned in writing in 1135 as part of the donation of the area by Countess Adelheid von Wildberg to the Kremsmünster Abbey as Prumste , the church consecrated to Saint Martin was consecrated in 1140 by the Passau Bishop Reginbert and made a parish church. The place received market rights in 1299 and at the same time also had a schoolmaster named Magister Leo. In 1503 the market and the surrounding villages were sold to the rule of Pöggstall, during the Reformation the place was strongly Protestant and only became a separate parish again in 1784. In 1906 the place is connected to the railway network, but the railway traffic is stopped again in 1986.
Population development
According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 1221 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 1242 inhabitants, in 1981 1317 and in 1971 1419 inhabitants.

- Edlesbergersee: To the west of Martinsberg in the Edlesberg district is the Edlesbergersee (more rarely also called Edlesbergerteich). This represents a local recreation area and fish reserve. Together with the Hanslteich, the Kampleitenteich and Reitzendorferteich, the 13.67 hectare pond was created under Anton Freiherr von Seldern in the middle of the 18th century to act as a water reservoir for the wood flood in the Weitenbach .

In 2001 there were 45 non-agricultural workplaces, agricultural and forestry operations according to the 1999 survey 132. The number of people in work at home was 534 according to the 2001 census. In 2001 the activity rate was 45.12 percent.
traffic
- Railway: The place formed the end point of the Schwarzenau – Zwettl – Martinsberg local railway , which until 1986 also served passenger traffic. After that, it was only used for freight transport (especially wood, waste disposal and heating oil), and in 2014 the tracks were finally dismantled.
- Industrial line: The industrial line Gutenbrunn – Martinsberg existed between 1922 and 1933 , this led from Martinsberg station to the saw in Gutenbrunn.
