Wood washing system

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A wood alluvial system , also known as the wooden alluvial channel or Schwemme for short , transports felled logs from the high forest into the valley. It consists of gullies ( giants , raft ditches, canals ) and sections of wild rafting ( Trift ).

Building the giants often used up a third of all the wood that could be carried on them. Since the wear was high and the service life was only a few years, large-scale clear cuts were made.

In the 20th century, the forester Viktor Schauberger built up to 50 km long innovative wood flooding systems with transport rates of more than 100 solid meters of wood per hour, location: approx. 2 km northwest of Neuberg an der Mürz and southeast of Krampen, federal state of Styria (Austria-Hungary ) with its own reservoir. Further systems based on this model were built in the Kingdom of Bulgaria and in the Balkans. By copying the peculiarities of natural, meandering rivers , the water giants received excellent transport properties, a significantly longer service life and, above all, reduced transport costs by more than 90 percent. Thanks to optimal use of the water temperature and targeted swirling of the water in the curves, even heavy, non-floatable logs such as beech and oak could be transported. Before Schauberger, the transport channels were straight in order to achieve the greatest incline and transport capacity over the shortest possible route.

Wood washing systems

  • Großraming , facility on the Enns in Upper Austria.
  • Klausen-Leopoldsdorf , on the Schwechat River near Vienna, Austria. For a description, see the Trift system on the Schwechat .
  • Bad Ischl , facility leads through the Rettenbach wilderness in Upper Austria.
  • Mürz Valley on the Mürz near Neuberg, Austria. This large alluvial tank was completed in 1928 according to plans by Viktor Schauberger and was in operation until 1951. After that, the entire high forest was cut down and operations ceased.
