Othmar Commenda (born May 29, 1954 in Wels ) is a former Austrian officer and was Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces from May 2013 to June 30, 2018 , after having held this position on an interim basis from January 24 to November 7, 2011.

After his military service in 1975, Commenda completed officer training at the Theresian Military Academy (born in Pasubio) and from 1979 was deployed as platoon and company commander at 14th Panzer Battalion in Wels. 1983/84 Captain Commenda was company commander of the 3Kp with the United Nations (UNDOF) in Syria-Golan.

Commenda completed general staff training at the National Defense Academy, which he graduated with honors in 1988. In 1996, Colonel Commenda attended the United States Army War College (USAWC) in Carlisle for a year, which he completed with a Masters in Strategic Studies. In 1999, Commenda completed the "Advanced Management Course" at the command academy of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg.

From 1988 to 1991 Commenda was chief instructor for tactics at the National Defense Academy in Vienna. In 1992 Commenda was entrusted with the command of the Army Reconnaissance Battalion in Mistelbach (Lower Austria) until he became Chief of Staff and Deputy Brigade Commander of the 3rd Panzer Grenadier Brigade in Mautern an der Donau in 1994. Afterwards he was involved in the foreign exercise Cooperative Guard 99 of the Partnership for Peace in the Czech Republic and from 2000 he was deputy head of the military policy department in the General Troop Inspectorate in the Federal Ministry for National Defense . From 1996 to 2000 Commenda was employed in the rank of colonel as the commander of the 15th general staff course.

From 2001 Brigadier Commenda was head of the staff department in the cabinet of the Defense Minister and from 2003 was entrusted with the management of the cabinet of the Federal Minister for National Defense. In 2003/2004 Major General Commenda was entrusted with the management of the project management of the Austrian Armed Forces Reform Commission and from 2004 he was responsible for the restructuring of the Austrian Armed Forces under Federal Minister Günther Platter as head of management in 2010.

In 2008 Lieutenant General Commenda was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff by Defense Minister Norbert Darabos . From the dismissal of Chief of Staff Edmund Entacher by Darabos on January 24th, 2011 to its repeal on November 8th, 2011 Commenda was interim chief of the General Staff . From May 2013 to the end of June 2018 he was Chief of the General Staff. He was then promoted to general . He was succeeded as Chief of Staff in July 2018 by Robert Brieger .

Commenda is married, has two children from his first marriage and lives in Vienna.
