Stiepl started for the Vienna Ice Skating Club . He had his first success in 1934 when he won the endurance race at the European Championships and set a new world record over 5000 m. He came in second place overall. He repeated the victory in the double distance at the European Championships in 1935 and 1937 at the World Championships , where he won a bronze medal. In 1936 he won the first Olympic medal in speed skating for Austria at the Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen with the bronze medal over 10,000 m. After Austria's annexation in 1938 , Stiepl continued to take part in the German championships, where he only came in second place three times. After the Second World War he tried to build on his successes and still took part in the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz , where he only finished 10th and 24th respectively. He ended his career in 1951 at the age of 37.
