Marc Aurel March

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Marc Aurel March is the largest annual march and running event of the Austrian Armed Forces .

history

predecessor

In 1963, US President John F. Kennedy took up an order from Theodore Roosevelt from 1908 , according to which every officer in the Marines must be able to cover a distance of 50 miles or 80 kilometers within 20 hours. At his instruction, under the commandant of the US Marines, General David M. Shoup , such a march with 20 officers was carried out again on a test basis and proceeded satisfactorily. After his brother Robert F. Kennedy took part in such a march and the media reported intensively about it, more and more such marches took place in the United States.

John F. Kennedy Memorial March

The first of these performance marches of the Austrian Armed Forces was started in memory of the murdered US President on November 19, 1965 in the Tegetthoff barracks in Vienna's Kuchelau. The route led 80 kilometers over the route Vienna - Tulln an der Donau - Grafenwörth to Krems - Mautern to the local Raab barracks.

The next long-distance march Vienna - Krems - Mautern , as this march was also called, was officially announced by the Austrian Armed Forces in 1966.

The last of these marches initially took place in 1974, but between April 1979 and 1988 they were again organized by HSV Wien .

Marc Aurel March

As a follow-up event, the Heeressportverein Wien organized the first “Marc Aurel March” in 1975. This led via Bruckneudorf - Neusiedl am See - Podersdorf am See - Prellenkirchen - Hainburg an der Donau - Bruck an der Leitha back to Bruckneudorf in the Benedek barracks over a distance of 60 or 100 kilometers.

The Marc Aurel March has also been a run since 1975.

In 1995 the route was reduced to 40 kilometers. Since 2002 there has been the option of covering the Marc Aurel March as a one-day march over 40 kilometers or as a two-day march with a distance of 2 × 40 kilometers.

The name is said to be reminiscent of the Roman Emperor Mark Aurel , who died during the Marcomann Wars on the Upper Danube in 180 in what was then the Roman legionary camp Vindobona (today: Vienna).
