Peter Stiedl

Peter Stiedl (born June 3, 1945 in Vienna ) was Chief of Police at the Vienna Federal Police Directorate from 1995 to 2007 .

In 1972, after completing his law degree, Stiedl joined the police department. There he worked as a consultant to the economic police from 1980–1984, and from 1985–1993 represented the board of directors and as main consultant. In 1990 he became head of the economic police and in 1993 head of the presidential department of the BPD Vienna. In 1995 he became the Chief of Police of Vienna ordered . In Vienna this office means personal union with the security director of the federal state of Vienna. On January 24, 2005 he received the Great Silver Medal of Honor from Governor Michael Häupl for services to the State of Vienna .

During Stiedl's tenure, Austria joined the EU and the Schengen Agreement in 1995 , with the result that border controls at the borders with Germany and Italy ceased to exist from December 1997, and from December 2007 also at the borders with the Czech Republic , Slovakia and Hungary . Around the year 2000, the term “ crime tourism” appeared in this context : travelers disguised as tourists while pursuing criminal projects became a constant problem for the Vienna police.

From 2000 onwards, Peter Stiedl had to adapt to a new political situation: the Ministry of the Interior , which has been a domain of the SPÖ since 1970 , has since been led by ÖVP department heads. Interior Minister Ernst Strasser tackled the Vienna police reform, effective from 2002 , in which Stiedl could not play a major role. Essential presidential agendas were entrusted to his vice-president, who is close to the ÖVP.

The abuse of office affairs in the Vienna police force in 2006 , one of the most serious management crises in the Vienna police force since its existence, were treated defensively by the functionally weakened Stiedl; he could not convey the feeling of "cracking down and cleaning up" to the public and gave the impression that he was delaying the ultimately inevitable suspension of the police lawyer Ernst Geiger and the regional police commander of Vienna, Roland Horngacher , out of caution.

In November 2007, Stiedl announced that he wanted to retire earlier than planned at the end of 2007. He justified his request for retirement by stating that several management positions at the Vienna Federal Police Directorate would have to be filled at the beginning of 2008 and that his retirement several months later might have led to a new "tendering circuit".

In December 2007 it was announced that Gerhard Pürstl , previously head of the office for legal issues and data protection at BPD Vienna, will succeed Stiedl on January 1, 2008.
