Most recently Geiger was head of department 3 in the Federal Criminal Police Office , responsible for investigations, organized and general crime. At the end of 2017 he retired.

Career history

After completing his studies, Geiger received his doctorate in law in 1977. After completing his legal practice, he joined the Vienna Federal Police Directorate in 1978. Among other things, he served as a consultant in what was then the district police station in Hietzing , where his work in the field of administrative criminal proceedings was based. Nevertheless, he was already interested in criminal police matters and after a few years was appointed to the security office at the time. There he was head of the department for theft, burglary and prostitution .

Geiger was the deputy board member of the Bureau for Identity Services, Forensic Technology and Searches, involved in setting up the crime scene groups (responsible for crime scene work and securing of evidence) and in setting up the AFIS (automated evaluation of fingerprint traces).

Most recently, Geiger was the head of Criminal Investigation Department  1 (successor organization to the Security Office), which is responsible for the central investigation of all forms of serious crime , and, as a member of the higher service of the BPD Vienna, carried the official title of Hofrat and in 2005 he received the Silver Medal for Merit the state of Vienna .

Geiger was suspended from the police service after an interim, never final conviction for violating official secrecy in the sauna affair and was temporarily employed as Global Security Manager at the Magna Group of Austro-Canadian Frank Stronach .

In July 2007 Geiger joined the indictment against his former colleague Roland Horngacher , who is accused of abuse of office, as a private participant. Geiger accuses Horngacher of having massively damaged his reputation through repeated illegal actions. Geiger, in turn, was sued by Roland Frühwirt, an investigator in the sauna affair and subsequent head of criminal investigation department 1, for defamation and credit damage. Geiger had accused Frühwirth of unilaterally investigating and exerting pressure on witnesses.

In March 2008, Geiger was acquitted in the new process, and in 2009 was also confirmed by the highest court. The Vienna Police Directorate also tried to provide vocational rehabilitation, and in September 2009 Geiger took up the position of department head at the Federal Criminal Police Office. In 2011 Geiger appeared again in the media as part of the investigation into the criminal case Julia Kührer .

He should retire at the end of 2017.
