René Franquès

René Franquès (born November 10, 1910 in Agde , † August 9, 1956 ) was a French football player .

Career

The 180 centimeter tall defender Franquès was in the squad of the first division club FC Sète from 1933 and came to his club a year after the establishment of professional football in France. At a time when substitutions and substitutions were not yet possible, the young player initially hardly made any appearances; so he was on the pitch no more than three times during the 1933/34 season, but was still involved in winning the 1934 championship title. Subsequently, he became a regular player, but had to forego further successes until the team was again champions in 1939.

In the same year, the Second World War broke out and resulted in regular gaming operations coming to a standstill. The championships were continued in an unofficial context and Franquès was able to take part in it unlike many colleagues; In 1942 he won the title in the southern group with Sète and made it into the national cup final in the same year . In the final he suffered a 2-0 defeat of his team and missed the chance of a cup victory after two official and one unofficial championships. The 1943/44 season was no longer played with clubs, but with regional teams, with Franquès joining the ÉF Montpellier-Languedoc .

In 1944 he returned to Sète and kept his regular seat even when regular gaming resumed in 1945. After a less than successful season in the table basement, he left the club in 1946 after 13 years and at the same time ended his first division career after 173 games and one goal. He signed with the second division AS Béziers and despite his relatively old age was one of the top performers, but ended his career in 1947 at the age of 36. A stadium in the municipality of Florensac in the Hérault department bears the name Stade René Franquès in honor of the footballer who died in 1956 .
