Wattrelos (Dutch: Waterlo ) is a city in northern France near Lille in Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France on the border with Belgium . The urban area is 1,362 hectares and has 40,958 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).

Neighboring cities are Tourcoing , Roubaix and Leers in France , Mouscron and Estaimpuis in Belgium . In this area, the Franco-Belgian border often follows urban roads and runs through gardens and densely populated areas.

history

In 1030 the name "Wattrelos" was first mentioned in a document. On December 27, 1566, the massacre of the Flemish " Geusen " by the troops of the Duke of Alba took place at the gates of the city , to which the "Fête des Berlouffes" commemorates every second weekend in September. The plague raged in Wattrelos in 1646. The "Rapport de Turgot" came from 1777 on the freedom of the manufacture of textiles. The foundation stone of the hospital was laid in 1895 and the town hall was built in 1911.

Twin cities

Wattrelos has a Polish, a Portuguese and two German twin cities : Eschweiler since 1973, Guarda since 1990, Köthen and Siemianowice Śląskie since 1993. There is a "Square d'Eschweiler" in Wattrelos. Eschweiler in turn has a "Rue de Wattrelos" at the highway entrance to the A4 and Köthen knows a "Wattrelos-Ring" in the industrial area West.
