Anton "Toni" Turek (born January 18, 1919 in Duisburg , † May 11, 1984 in Neuss ) was a German football player and world champion from 1954.

Life

Anton Turek's father was employed as a worker in the Krupp company in Duisburg. At the age of 10 he played football as a child from 1929 to 1936 at Duisburger SC 1900 . He was briefly used in 1934 in the city team of Duisburg. Sepp Herberger already noticed him at a youth game during this time . After graduating from school, he took up an apprenticeship as a baker, which he also successfully completed. In 1936 he moved to TuS Duisburg 48/99 . At the age of 18 he was drafted into the labor service and in 1939, as a soldier in the German Wehrmacht, was used as a motorcyclist during the attack on Poland. During his war effort at the front, a shrapnel broke through his steel helmet and remained stuck in the back of his head for life. This made itself felt painfully again and again later. From 1941 to 1943 Toni, as he was called, played temporarily as a war guest player with TSG Ulm 1846 , but also with TuS Duisburg, to which he returned permanently in 1943. In the decisive game for the Gaume Championship in 1942 Toni Turek was in the goal when his TuS Duisburg 0-5 against Hamborn 07. Due to the defeat, the black and white missed participation in the German championship.

In 1943 he married Wilhelmine, called "Miezi". His marriage resulted in two children; his daughter Ute was born in 1946 and his son Hans-Jürgen in 1950.

Shortly before the end of the Second World War he was taken prisoner , from which he was released very quickly because of his job as a baker, which was needed. After serving in the war, he played for Eintracht Frankfurt from 1946 to 1947 . From then on he was a goalkeeper u. a. Used for the southern upper division and TSG Ulm 1846 (from 1947). During this time in Ulm, he also worked as a sports teacher in a youth prison. In 1950 he moved to Fortuna Düsseldorf . Only when he was 31 did he get a regular place in the national team . For the first time he stood in the goal of the national team at the first international match after World War II on November 22, 1950. This made him the oldest national goalkeeper at the debut. He kept this record for well over twenty years after his death - it was not until November 19, 2013 that he was replaced by Roman Weidenfeller, who was 33 at the time . Between 1950 and 1954 he played 20 international matches for Germany. Turek was known for his good eye and sometimes wouldn't move even with balls that just barely missed the goal. National coach Sepp Herberger thought he was a brilliant athlete with occasional reckless moves.

For his participation in the soccer world championship in 1954 Toni Turek had to get 4 weeks special leave from his employer, the Rheinische Bahngesellschaft - today's Rheinbahn AG Düsseldorf. He only got this special leave because the DFB was willing to take on his loss of wages for this time in the amount of 537.79 marks. As a result, his daily wage was 18.49 marks. In the final of the 1954 FIFA World Cup was Turek as the oldest player of the tournament in the German goal and was with the team through the 3: 2 victory July 4, 1954 against the overwhelming favorites, the national team of Hungary , world champion . In the first half, Turek owed a goal for the Hungarians due to his recklessness. Then he collected himself. In the second half in particular, his saves made him a goalkeeper legend. In Herbert Zimmermann's radio report , which football fans described as unforgettable , the words “Turek, you are a devil! Turek, you are a football god ! Sorry for the enthusiasm, the football laymen will declare us crazy ... “More than 100,000 people were on the streets when Turek was honored with a triumphal march on July 8, 1954 in Düsseldorf. He received 1,000 marks as a prize.

His last international match in October 1954 was Germany's 3-1 defeat against the French national football team . He ended his football career in 1956 with Borussia Mönchengladbach .

During his season as a goalkeeper, Turek worked as an employee at the Düsseldorfer Rheinbahn AG .

In September 1973, he fell ill overnight with a mysterious paralysis of the legs, from the waist down. Several complications occurred during her time in the hospital . The spleen and part of the stomach were removed. Turek suffered four pulmonary embolisms , required blood transfusions, and spent two months in intensive care . His body weight dropped from 90 to 45 kg. It took three years before he was able to walk on a stick again, halfway recovered. Turek later suffered from cardiovascular disease and had to undergo heart surgery. There was also an operation on the gallbladder . In the last years of his life he could only move around using crutches and a wheelchair. He then retired on April 30, 1977.

When Toni Turek died eleven days after a stroke in the Johanna Etienne Hospital in Neuss in 1984 at the age of 65 , he left behind his wife Wilhelmine, who had cared for him the entire time, and his two children.
