The Hans-Walter-Wild-Stadion is the city's football stadium with an athletics facility for the city of Bayreuth . It is named after the former mayor, Hans Walter Wild , who is considered a promoter of local sport in Bayreuth.

history

It was built as a municipal stadium and part of a sports park, which includes an indoor swimming pool, an ice rink and the multifunctional Upper Franconian Hall (1988). On June 12, 1967, the stadium was inaugurated with greetings from then Lord Mayor Wild. Sports competitions were held in front of about 2500 spectators, to which several top German athletes had traveled.

In 1974 the stadium was given a roofed grandstand. In 2002 the name was changed after the mayor, who was in office from 1958 to 1988, who was a great sponsor of sport and was significantly involved in the construction of the sports park. The capacity is 21,500 spectators, there are 3,500 seats and around 18,000 standing places.

use

On May 23, 1974, the converted stadium was inaugurated with a friendly game between SpVgg Bayreuth and Kickers Offenbach . Since then, it has served the club as a regular venue, which was last renovated in 2005 to enable play in the regional league . The club previously played in the stadium on Jakobshöhe . The attendance record was set in 1979 when 22,500 spectators attended a promotion game to the First Bundesliga against Bayer 05 Uerdingen . A year later, SpVgg Bayreuth played in front of 18,000 spectators against FC Bayern Munich in the DFB Cup and won 1-0.

There were also international matches for the German B national team and the women's national team in the stadium. On May 30, 2010, the match between Mexico and Gambia took place for the first time in a men's senior national team international match in the stadium.

The stadium also fulfills an important function as a practice site for physical education in the neighboring schools.

The stadium was also used for open-air concerts . The first concert with Rod Stewart and Gianna Nannini attracted 20,000 visitors on June 22, 1991. Even Bon Jovi , Peter Maffay , Pur and on 2 September 1992 Michael Jackson Been a guest. After a long break, the stadium was used again on September 6, 2013 for a performance by the Toten Hosen . A total of more than 26,000 tickets were sold (3,000 of them in the stands), so the concert was sold out.

Remodeling plans

The back straight of the stadium should be roofed over, but this conversion did not take place. In 2012 the Bayreuth city council decided to renovate the sports facility. Only on October 20, 2015, the city's building committee decided to start the renovation work. During the work, the athletics facility will be renewed. The opposite stand should be moved as close as possible to the playing field. The seating of the main grandstand, the roofing of the standing room and the floodlights will be replaced. This should cost around 2.5 million euros. In addition, there were costs of 650,000 euros for the renovation of the stadium's sewage system , which was completed in 2015.

In March 2016, the SpVgg Bayreuth criticized the schedule of the work from September 2016 to spring 2017. The stadium would not be usable for the club and income of 25 % would be lost. The SpVgg suggested that the work be carried out between May and July 2016 when there was no play. But this is not possible, said the city. First of all, all permits would have to be there and the tenders would have to take place. This is too short-term for an early conversion. In mid-March 2016, an urgency motion supported by the CSU was rejected in the Bayreuth city council with 19:15 votes and the schedule remained. The club had to move to the Waldstadion Weismain during the renovation .
