Hans Walter Wild (born November 27, 1919 in Würzburg ; † May 24, 2001 in Bayreuth ) was a German administrative lawyer and local politician ( SPD ). From May 1, 1958 to April 30, 1988, he was Lord Mayor of Bayreuth.

Live and act

Wild was elected to the highest office in the city as the successor to Hans Rollwagen in 1958, after a tough election campaign against the lawyer Fritz Meyer from the non-partisan voter group (ÜFW) . Against the duo friend of Franz Josef Strauss , his party CSU did not put up a candidate for the mayor's office. During the elections of the following 17 years, Wild was confirmed in office by a “red-black” coalition. For the first time in the 1976 election, the CSU ran its own candidate against Wild. His challenger Ortwin Lowack took advantage of the fact that Wild had acquired Gut Grunau very cheaply in the election campaign and achieved a surprisingly good result with 41.6% of the vote.

Like Rollwagen a knowledgeable administrator, but with a completely different temperament, Wild was a "showmaster of high entertainment value" who "sometimes appeared a little cocky". Only a few of its predecessors are likely to have had a more lasting impact on Bayreuth. When he took office, the housing shortage was not over; in the years that followed, an unprecedented construction boom changed the familiar picture. The built-up area of the city doubled during Wild's tenure. In the 1960s he encountered no significant opposition in the city council .

During his term of office, among other things, the construction of the New Town Hall and the mostly multi-lane street "Stadtkernring" as well as the foundation of the university fell . The fact that historical buildings were sometimes senselessly destroyed in the process is often viewed critically in retrospect. From today's point of view, buildings worth preserving such as the half-timbered building "Eck-Schobert" or the "Tabulatur" (home of the conductor Hans Richter ), but also the Ludwigsbrücke over the Red Main , fell victim to the pickaxe. He pushed through the demolition of the priestly houses in Sophienstraße from the 16th century (“for me they are in the end old sheds”) as well as the first Bavarian social housing estate in Burg , against the will of the town planning council, who appealed to the preservationists and town historians.

After 30 years as Lord Mayor of Bayreuth, Wild resigned from office. His successor was the social democrat Dieter Mronz , who was elected in spring 1988 .
