Hans Rollwagen

Hans Rollwagen (born June 14, 1892 in Nördlingen , † March 29, 1992 in Bayreuth ) was a German politician ( SPD ). He was Lord Mayor of Bayreuth from 1948 to 1958 .

Life

Hans Rollwagen grew up in Augsburg and attended the humanistic high school in Sankt Anna . He then studied law and political science in Munich, Kiel, Berlin and Würzburg. During the First World War he was a soldier and served in Verdun , where he was seriously wounded in 1916. He finished his studies in 1920.

Rollwagen joined the SPD and in 1919 the Augsburg city council. After working as a lawyer for a while, he was elected First Mayor of Neustadt bei Coburg in 1923 . From 1929 to 1933 he sat on the city council of Nuremberg. After the seizure of power , Rollwagen resigned for political reasons. Although he later worked as a finance and legal officer, he refused any political activity.

After the Second World War , he ran for the SPD as Lord Mayor of Bayreuth. In 1948 he was elected with 38 out of 40 city council votes. He took office on July 1 of that year, which he held for two legislative terms. He was in office at the time of the economic miracle and was largely responsible for the reconstruction of the city. In his politics, he primarily focused on thrift, which not only brought him friends. The foundation of the non-profit housing cooperative (GEWOG) in the city, which is characterized by housing shortage, and the development of the industrial area Sankt Georgen fell during his term of office. In the discussion about the continuation of the Richard Wagner Festival after the Second World War, “Rollwagen emphasized [...] the right of the Wagner family to be in charge”. In 1958, for reasons of age, he did not run again as a candidate for the office of Lord Mayor.

Rollwagen was president of the Upper Franconian District Assembly ; after he retired in 1962, he became its vice-president. In addition, the excellent administrative and financial specialist was actively involved in drawing up the municipal code of the Free State of Bavaria .

For his work he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany , the Bavarian Constitutional Medal in Gold and the Bavarian Order of Merit. In 1958 he was made an honorary citizen of Bayreuth . He is also an honorary citizen of Neustadt bei Coburg.
