Historic social housing estate Burg

“Swiss house” in the social housing estate Burg

The first Bavarian social housing estate was built on the castle in 1861 . The mechanical cotton spinning mill, which employed 630 workers that year, built six Swiss-style terraced houses there, to which a further 67 were added in the following years. With 52 square meters of living space each on two floors and a small garden, they were generously designed for the conditions at the time. By 1866 80, in a second construction phase by 1909 more than 100, and ultimately a total of 284 apartments were built for the spinning workers and their families. This created a residential colony, even with its own “Kärwa” (parish fair). The stable rental prices were important for the workers, while private apartments in the city quickly became more expensive with increasing demand and a shortage of supply. In addition, the mechanical cotton spinning mill offered inexpensive food and clothing, had its own dining houses, a works library, a sewing and knitting school and even a kindergarten. The company's pension fund founded in 1856 was also exemplary.

After the quarter survived the hail of bombs in 1945, the factory estate was completely destroyed after the war. The city's building committee decided to demolish it in February 1973, which the mayor at the time, Hans Walter Wild , pushed through against the will of the city building council, who appealed to the preservationists and city historians. The last of the “Swiss little houses” disappeared in the summer of 1981, with them a historically valuable complex was destroyed from today's perspective.

Current situation

Today the castle is built with modern apartment blocks as well as administration and school buildings.
