Edwin Westenberger (born October 15, 1948 - † November 8, 2002 ) was a German soccer player . In the football league from the defenders 64 graduated and in the second Bundesliga 281 (10) games.

career

The defensive player Edwin Westenberger came to the "lilies" of SV Darmstadt 98 for the 1971/72 round at the Böllenfalltor stadium via the stations FV Neuenhain and Eintracht Frankfurt (amateurs) . Under coach Udo Klug , a strong team developed in the second division of the Regional Football League South . As a strong duel, Westenberger formed the defensive center with Libero Walter Bechtold . In the second season, 1972/73, Darmstadt won the championship in the Regionalliga Süd and thus moved into the promotion round to the Bundesliga . The team around attacker Willi Lippens , Rot-Weiss Essen, prevailed as a climber and Westenberger also competed in the last year of the old second-rate regional league, 1973/74, in what was then the foundation of the Bundesliga. Finally, they finished fourth in the regional league and were thus qualified for the newly introduced 2nd Bundesliga for the 1974/75 season. From 1971 to 1974 Westenberger had completed 104 league games in the Regionalliga Süd for Darmstadt. He also got three goals in it, all of which he scored in the first season.

On the first match day in the two-pronged 2. Bundesliga, on August 3, 1974, he was also a member of the "Lilien" eleven, who suffered a 0-1 defeat at 1. FC Saarbrücken in the opening game. At the end of the round, Darmstadt was in tenth place after 38 league games and Westenberger had completed 31 competitive games and scored one goal. When in the 1977/78 season under coach Lothar Buchmann the championship win in front of 1. FC Nürnberg and promotion to the 1. Bundesliga was completed, the defensive backing had played all 38 league games.

The Bundesliga debut on August 12, 1978 ended for Darmstadt and Vorstopper Westenberger with a 0-0 draw in the home game against Hertha BSC. At the end of the round, Darmstadt rose immediately to the 2nd division with 21:47 points. Together with goalkeeper Dieter Rudolf and his two field team colleagues Jürgen Kalb and Willibald Weiss , he had played all 34 league games in the Bundesliga.

Edwin Westenberger began his career in 1971 at SV Darmstadt 98 , with whom he was promoted to the Bundesliga twice and with whom he stayed until June 1984. With a total of 449 appearances and 13 goals, he is considered a Darmstadt football legend.

Edwin Westenberger died on November 8, 2002.
