He played in midfield and in defense. From 1968 to 1979 Kalb played a total of 285 league games and scored 28 goals in the Bundesliga for the clubs Eintracht Frankfurt , Karlsruher SC and SV Darmstadt 98 . He won the DFB Cup with Eintracht Frankfurt in 1974 and 1975 .

career

Bundesliga and 2nd division, 1968 to 1980

Kalb played for the Frankfurt district club VfB Unterliederbach until 1967 and from 1968 to 1980 in the first and second Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt , Karlsruher SC and SV Darmstadt 98 . He scored 28 goals and 3 own goals in 285 games in the Bundesliga . Kalb won the DFB Cup with Eintracht Frankfurt in 1974 and 1975 under coach Dietrich Weise . After a year with the amateurs of Eintracht Frankfurt, Kalb, like his teammates Günter Keifler and Bernd Nickel, was taken on as an Olympic amateur in the professional squad for the 1968/69 season. In Erich Ribbeck's first year as coach , Eintracht finished eighth and Kalb had scored four goals in 28 appearances. Kalb's Bundesliga debut took place on September 21, 1968 in a 1-0 away win for Eintracht at Werder Bremen. He formed the midfield with Hermann-Dieter Bellut and Bernd Hölzenbein behind the top three Jürgen Grabowski , Wilhelm Huberts and Bernd Nickel. In his first year in the Bundesliga he also gained international experience: Kalb made five appearances in the Messe-Cup against Wacker Innsbruck, Juventus Turin and Atletico Bilbao and made his debut on April 7, 1969 - like Friedhelm Haebermann - at the side of his Eintracht- Colleague Bernd Nickel in the amateur national team of the DFB. In Bamberg, the DFB amateur team won 2-0 against Italy and Kalb played in midfield. In the Bundesliga, fifth place in the 1971/72 season was the best place Kalb achieved with coach Ribbeck. From the 1973/74 season, Dietrich Weise came to Eintracht as the new coach and led the team to fourth (1974) and third (1975) rank in the table and to two final wins in the cup. In the 1974 cup competition, Kalb converted a penalty kick to make it 3-2 in the 90th minute in the semi-finals of the home game against Bayern Munich on April 13th. In the last Ribbeck season in 1972/73, Kalb also played in the two games in the UEFA Cup against eventual winners Liverpool FC . In his last Eintracht season 1974/75 he was also in the European Cup Winners' Cup in the two games against the team around superstar Oleg Blochin , Dynamo Kiev, on the field. After seven rounds of the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt (185-26), Kalb joined the newly promoted BL Karlsruher SC for the 1975/76 season and moved to Baden .

Kalb played the starting game of the 1975/76 round at his previous club, Eintracht Frankfurt, with the blue-whites from the Karlsruhe Wildpark Stadium. On August 9, 1975, the newcomer with coach Carl-Heinz Rühl and the defensive players Kalb, Ewald Schäffner , Rainer Ulrich and Günther Fuchs won 2-0 after two goals from center forward Bernd Hoffmann . At the end of the round, KSC just held the class with 15th place. Like Ulrich, Winfried Schäfer and Wilfried Trenkel, Kalb had played all 34 league games. In the second year of the Bundesliga, 1976/77 , the KSC (28-40) just missed relegation one point behind Kaiserslautern, Saarbrücken and Bochum (all three clubs had 29-39 points). The final success on May 21, 1977 2-1 against MSV Duisburg could not change that. Kalb had appeared in 32 games for the KSC. The Frankfurt also stayed in the 1977/78 round of the 2nd Bundesliga in Karlsruhe. At first, the goal of an immediate return to the Bundesliga seemed feasible under the new coach Bernd Hoss , but after his dismissal at the end of October and the installation of Rolf Schafstall as his successor, the KSC went from the top of the table to the midfield. Schafstall was a professional coach, but he did not fit the team and the Karlsruhe environment. The last two months of the season temporarily bridged the old league bar Walter Bauis . KSC finished the season in seventh place and Jürgen Kalb, who was absolutely reliable as always, had completed all 38 rounds with two goals. He joined the Bundesliga promoted SV Darmstadt 98 for the 1978/79 season.

The Bundesliga start game was played by the "lilies" from the stadium at Böllenfalltor on August 12, 1978 at home against Hertha BSC. The home game ended 0-0 in front of 25,000 spectators and Kalb was called up by promotion coach Lothar Buchmann in the midfield. With 21:47 points, Darmstadt took 18th place at the end of the round and immediately relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga. The “Darmstadt model”, which relied on after-work professionals, failed because of the sporting and financial demands of the Bundesliga. As almost usual with him, Kalb had played all 34 rounds with two goals. That was also the case with teammates Dieter Rudolf , Edwin Westenberger and Willibald Weiss . Jürgen Kalb played his last season in paid football in 1979/80 with Darmstadt in the 2nd Bundesliga. In the preliminary round he experienced the coaching work of Jörg Berger , in the second round Werner Olk took his place . As a result, fourth place came out for the relegated Bundesliga. Kalb had also completed all round matches in his twelfth year as a professional with 40 league appearances and scored five goals. With the second division game on May 31, 1980 at 1. FC Nürnberg (1: 1), Kalb said goodbye to Darmstadt and ended his career after 285 Bundesliga games (28 goals) and 78 games in the 2nd Bundesliga (7 goals).

Amateur national team, 1969 to 1975

At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, he was a member of the DFB selection, which reached the quarter-finals, but lost 3-2 to the GDR selection. This was the FRG's first international football match against the GDR, but it is not counted as an A international match, as the DFB only offered so-called Bundesliga amateurs. Kalb made a total of 48 appearances in the German amateur national team from 1969 to 1975 and is in second position behind record national player Egon Schmitt . On April 26, 1974, the German amateur team prevailed in the competition of the 1973/74 UEFA Amateur Cup in the semifinals against the Netherlands with 4-2 on penalties and was thus qualified for the final. That could not be played against Yugoslavia two days later because the field was unplayable. Both teams were determined to be the tournament winners. Kalb played in midfield in the semi-finals. Kalb played his last amateur international match on May 15, 1975 in Barcelona against Spain in a 2: 3 defeat in the Olympic qualification.

After the career

Jürgen Kalb is still active today, but he swapped the big, round leather for smaller balls: for years he has been one of the best tennis players in his age group in Hesse and an ambitious amateur golfer. He works as an advertising consultant for the Höchst Kreisblatt, the regional edition of the Frankfurter Neue Presse, and, as he reports, is still occasionally visited in the editorial office to ask old fans for autographs.
