Career

Nuremberg, until 1971

Schäffner comes from the youth department of 1. FC Kirchheim in Lower Franconia; from there the talent was brought into the youth department of the Bundesliga club 1. FC Nürnberg . In the 1966/67 season, the defender and midfielder made his debut in the international match on February 14, 1967 in Mönchengladbach against England in the youth national team of the DFB. He made his debut alongside fellow players Gerhard Heinze , Egon Schmitt , Josef Pirrung , Rainer Zobel and Roland Weidle . After success against the Netherlands in qualifying in March 1967, the DFB junior team was qualified for the UEFA youth tournament in Turkey in May. Due to the 0-1 goal against France, the following two successes against Austria (2: 1) and Hungary (3: 1) were no longer enough for the DFB Juniors to advance. Schäffner had played the two qualifying as well as the three group games at the tournament.

With the Franks , the transition to professional football was difficult for the youth national player. In his first year, the 1967/68 season , he was theoretically German champion under coach Max Merkel , but was not used. Only the newcomers Zvezdan Čebinac (33-3) and August Starek (24-5) made it into the regular line-up of the successful Viennese coach. The young player had no chance of playing against the players on the defensive with Horst Leupold , Fritz Popp , Ludwig Müller , Karl-Heinz Ferschl and Ferdinand Wenauer . Even in the sensational relegation season of the reigning German champions 1968/69, Schäffner did not play in the Bundesliga. It was only in the second half of the 1969/70 season in the Regional Football League South , under coach Kuno Klötzer , that he played his first competitive game for Nuremberg. He made his debut on March 1, 1970 in a 4-0 win in the Frankenderby against SpVgg Fürth on the side of Leupold, Wenauer and Amand Theis . At the end of the round the Bundesliga relegated was in third place and Schäffner had played 13 games (1 goal) in the regional league. When 1. FC Nürnberg was able to win the championship title in the Regionalliga Süd in the 1970/71 season , he had made 17 appearances. In the following round of promotion he played all eight games against Fortuna Düsseldorf, Borussia Neunkirchen, FC St. Pauli and Wacker 04 Berlin, but the club disappointed with fourth place. In the summer of 1971, the 22-year-old Schäffner ended his activity at 1. FC Nürnberg and joined SpVgg Bayreuth .

Bayreuth and Karlsruhe, 1971 to 1976

In the Wagner city, the black and yellow returned to the Regionalliga Süd for the 1971/72 season. Under coach Jenö Vincze , Schäffner made his debut on August 15, 1971 in the 0-1 home defeat against Karlsruher SC with the game association in the Regionalliga Süd. Together with Grimm and Horn, he formed the midfield of the Vincze-Elf. The two games against his former club 1. FC Nürnberg each ended with a 1-1 draw. At the end of the round, Bayreuth managed to keep the league in 13th place and Schäffner had scored one goal in 35 appearances. In his second year with the Spielvereinigung, 1972/73 , the eleven around Manfred Großler and the newcomer Wolfgang Böhni surprisingly came in fourth. Bayreuth made people sit up and take notice on February 17, 1973 with a 2-1 away win in front of 27,000 spectators at 1. FC Nürnberg. Here, too, Grimm, Horn and Schäffner formed the middle field. After a total of 63 league games with two goals, Schäffner signed a new contract with Karlsruher SC for the last round of the old second division of the Regionalliga, 1973/74, and moved to the blue-whites in Baden.

The new coach in the Wildparkstadion , Carl-Heinz Rühl , entrusted Schäffner with the chief role in defense, the position of the libero in front of the goalkeeper monument to Rudi Wimmer . However, the success did not come quickly, the KSC ended the last regional league year 1973/74 - in spring 1974 Roland Schmider had taken over the office of 1st chairman at the KSC - in eighth place and Schäffner had in 26 league games (2 Tore). The man from Franconia had already proven his skills in defensive organization and the quality of the game setup. As for the first season in the new 2nd Bundesliga , 1974/75, - on June 30, 1973, the Bundestag of the DFB in Frankfurt had decided to introduce a two-part 2nd Bundesliga as the foundation of the Bundesliga - to join the Karlsruhe offensive Bernd Hoffmann , Martin Kübler and Peter Gutzeit improved significantly, the former founding member of the Bundesliga from the 1963/64 season succeeded in winning the title and thus returning to the Bundesliga. Karlsruhe started the new league on August 3, 1974 with a 3-2 away win against FC Homburg. With a converted penalty in the 46th minute of the game, Libero Schäffner had ensured the interim 1: 1 equalization for his team. After the first half of the season, the team from the wildlife park led the table with 27:11 points. After 23 games in a row, in the 1-0 success on February 15, 1975 against 1. FC Saarbrücken, the KSC defense chief suffered a massive ligament stretch in the ankle area, which then prevented him from being on the pitch again until the end of the round the KSC to become active in the championship round. Schäffner had formed the defensive of the first champions of the 2nd Bundesliga in the group south in the season 1974/75 with goalkeeper Rudi Wimmer and the defensive colleagues Jürgen Radau , Rainer Ulrich , Gerd Komorowski and Günter Fuchs .

For the round 1975/76 the former youth national player of 1. FC Nürnberg finally made it, he made his debut on August 9, 1975, in a 2-0 away win at Eintracht Frankfurt, in the Bundesliga. The KSC defense line-up with goalkeeper Siegfried Kessler , Jürgen Kalb , Schäffner, Ulrich and Fuchs was a guarantee of victory. Karlsruhe managed to stay in league with 15th place in the table, Schäffner played in 27 games (2 goals) in the upper house of German football. Due to the commitment of the Cologne Libero in the winter transfer period, Karl-Heinz Struth , the Bundesliga chapter was done for the Franconian with the deployment on May 29, 1976, in the 0-1 away defeat at MSV Duisburg, but already after one season.

Augsburg, 1976 to 1979

He spent the last three years of his playing career at FC Augsburg . Under coach Max Merkel, he made his debut on December 12, 1976 in Fuggerstadt in a 2-1 home win against the Stuttgarter Kickers in the Rosenaustadion. He acted as a Libero for the Green-White-Reds and formed the defensive together with goalkeeper Benno Larsen and the defenders Heinz Michallik, Edgar Schneider and Werner Killmaier. At the end of the round, the FCA was in ninth place and Schäffner had completed 15 games (1 goal). In his second year in Augsburg, 1977/78, he was missing under the new coach Werner Olk in only four games and organized the defensive of the FCA in 34 competitive games, which took 14th place. Schäffner said goodbye with the 6: 5 away win on June 9, 1979 at FC Hanau 93 from the professional field. Overall, the trained dental technician and son of a dentist has 27 (2) Bundesliga games, 94 (3) 2nd Bundesliga games, 119 (5) regional league games and eight promotion round games in the statistics.

For the 1979/80 season he joined the ASV Neumarkt in the Bavarian League .
