Arno Koselleck

Arno Koselleck (born August 15, 1891 in Madlow ; † 1977 ) was a German historian and history teacher .

Life

Koselleck passed the Abitur in 1909 in Görlitz and studied at the University of Leipzig until he received his doctorate in history in 1914. During his studies he became a member of the Association of German Students in Leipzig . Then he served in World War I and received the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class. After the state examination and legal clerkship, he became a history teacher at the Görlitz secondary school and an active reform pedagogue in 1920 . In 1928 he became headmaster and senior director of studies at the Heilig-Geist-Gymnasium in Breslau .

In 1929 he was appointed professor for history didactics at the Pedagogical Academy in Breslau. In 1930 he took over the management of the newly founded Pedagogical Academy in Kassel , which was closed again in 1932 due to savings. Koselleck was transferred to the Pedagogical Academy in Dortmund . In December 1933, he was given leave of absence as a senior teacher until he found a position as a history teacher at the Saarbrücken College for Teacher Training . Koselleck approached National Socialism in the 1930s and finally joined the NSDAP in 1941 and joined the Sturmabteilung (SA) as a Sturmbannführer . During the Second World War he served in the military district command in Saarbrücken as Major d. R. and was captured by the Americans in 1945. Minister of Education, Adolf Grimme , called him “Minister Becker” as director of the Hanover University of Education , where he taught from 1946 to 1956, and continued as a lecturer until 1966. From 1947 to 1949 he was the chairman of the Historical Association for Lower Saxony . In 1961 he received the Great Cross of Merit of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit .

His son is the historian Reinhart Koselleck .
