Fritz Popp (born November 20, 1940 ) is a former German football player .

Player career

Left-back Popp began his football career in 1951 at 1. FC Nürnberg. In 1956 he moved to TSV 1860 Schweinau. In 1960 he moved to 1. FC Nürnberg . With this he played in the Oberliga Süd and was champions of the league in 1961 and 1962. But he only came to a league assignment in the 1962/63 season. In addition, they secured the German championship in 1961 after a 3-0 win against Borussia Dortmund on June 24th of that year without Popp playing. In the following years, the team won the DFB Cup without Popp being involved. In the following year 1962/63 he played with Nuremberg in the Oberliga Süd . Behind TSV 1860 Munich , the team was runner-up. The defender came only to a league use. Against the rivals Helmut Hilpert , Horst Leupold and Ferdinand Wenauer , he had little chance. Even before the start of the season, it was certain that the FCN would take part in the newly introduced Bundesliga for the new season . There Popp came to more stakes. From the tenth day of play he was part of the regular formation in the defense of the Franks. The defensive player made his debut in the Bundesliga on November 9, 1963 in an away game against Borussia Dortmund. In the following years, apart from 1964/65, Popp established himself as a top performer. In 1967/68 he became German champions with the Nürnbergers. Already in the following season the team disappointed so much that they were relegated to the regional league as penultimate . Popp had a total of 136 Bundesliga appearances for Nuremberg. Popp stayed for three more years and achieved first place in the Regionalliga Süd with the club in 1971 . In the promotion round, however, the club then failed. In the next two years, the club could no longer qualify for the promotion round. Popp made a total of 98 regional league appearances. In 1972 Popp ended his active professional career, although he was still under contract until 1974. He did not get along with the new coach Zlatko Čajkovski . He played a total of 424 games for Nuremberg. He then played for six years for ASV Herzogenaurach, with which he was also champion of the Bayern League.

Coaching career

After finishing his active career, he trained in Herzogenaurach. He then returned to the club and held various positions there (including player observer). he first trained the club's amateurs. In 1981, after Horst Heese's dismissal, he was interim coach of the club's first team in the Bundesliga for a short time. Nuremberg was able to reach 14th place in the table in 1981 as a re-climber. In the 1981/82 season he took over the role of assistant coach, and in the 1983/84 season he trained the club team for a game as the successor to Rudi Kröner until Heinz Höher took office . Later he coached the A-youth of 1. FCN and in 1986 became coordinator for the amateur department.
