Matthias Bruns (born August 19, 1957 in Peine) is a former German soccer player .

Career

Matthias Bruns began his career at SpVgg Groß-Bülten and later moved to Viktoria Ölsburg . In 1974 he went to Eintracht Braunschweig and played there first in the A-youth and then one season with the amateurs.

For the 1976/77 season he then moved into the Bundesliga squad of Eintracht, but did not complete a Bundesliga game in his first professional season because of the Abitur and the subsequent military service.

Initially, Bruns played as a striker , but was retrained as a defender by his then coach Branko Zebec , as the offensive at Eintracht was heavily occupied with players like Dietmar Erler , Wolfgang Frank and Danilo Popivoda and Bruns could not prevail.

On August 31, 1977, the 5th matchday of the 1977/78 season, the now 20-year-old made his first division debut (0: 6 at 1. FC Köln). After two seasons as a substitute, he fought for a regular place in 1979/80, but this season ended with relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga . After the direct promotion under coach Uli Maslo , four years in the Bundesliga followed. In Bruns' last season, Braunschweig played second class again. However, he only played twice in that 1985/86 season and had to end his career due to an ankle injury.

Since then he has been working for the Braunschweiger newspaper publisher in Wolfsburg .
