Gerd Paulus (born December 31, 1953 ) is a former German soccer player .
Career
Via the lower-class clubs SV Fraulautern and FV 08 Riegelsberg , Gerd Paulus came to the south-west regional division Röchling Völklingen . With the club from Saarland, the defender failed in 1972/73 in the promotion round to the 1st Bundesliga , but qualified a year later for the newly created 2nd Bundesliga .
Since Paulus belonged to the Völklingen regular formation, he consequently made his professional debut on the 1st matchday of the 1974/75 season (2-1 against SpVgg Bayreuth ). Röchling Völklingen was able to hold onto the second division for three seasons, but for the 1977/78 season they voluntarily gave up their license. Thereupon Paulus left the club and went to Kickers Offenbach , with which he remained a second division player.
As with his ex-club, Paulus was also a constant in the defense in Offenbach. In terms of sport, the change was an improvement for the player, because with the club from Hesse he was mostly in the upper half of the table, while in Völklingen, at least last season, relegation battle was announced. In 1981 and 1982 the dream of “first division” only burst in the relegation; In 1982/83 it finally worked. As the runner-up, the OFC did not even have to take the relegation hurdle and was promoted to the Bundesliga . Under coach Lothar Buchmann and with players like Uwe Bein , Franz Michelberger , Michael Kutzop and last but not least Gerd Paulus, the "watchdog" as the kicker called him, the league should be achieved. The plan failed, and the OFC was relegated penultimate and with 106 goals conceded back to the 2nd Bundesliga. Paulus made 23 first division appearances this season, which were his only ones in the German elite class.
But it got worse: Offenbach was again penultimate, this time in the second division. In the upper league , the club was dominant again, with player Gerd Paulus, who remained loyal to his club, and rose again after two Hesse championships in 1987.
After that, Paulus played for the OFC for two years and finally ended his professional career in 1989.
In 1991 he became a player-coach at VfB Oberndorf.
