Archibald "Archie" Knox (born May 1, 1947 in Tealing ) is a Scottish football coach and former player.
Club career
Knox played in Scotland for Forfar Athletic , FC St. Mirren , Dundee United and briefly for FC Montrose . With Dundee United he reached the Scottish Cup final in 1974 , but his team lost to Celtic Glasgow .
Coaching career
Knox's coaching career began when he first worked for Forfar Athletic in 1976. For four years he worked in the dual role of player- coach. In 1980 he became assistant to Alex Ferguson at FC Aberdeen; In the three years at the Dons , the team won the Scottish Cup twice as well as the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1983 and the Supercup in two games against Hamburger SV . In 1983 he took over the coaching position at FC Dundee for two and a half years . After a brief return to Aberdeen, he followed Alex Ferguson to Manchester United in 1986 , where he stayed until April 1991. He returned to Scotland, where he was co-trainer of Walter Smith with the Rangers . This coaching team was able to win six titles in the following seven years. Both went to Everton FC in July 1998 , where they worked together until March 2000.
Then Knox worked for three years as co- coach of Craig Brown with the Scottish national team . Short engagements as an assistant at Millwall FC , Coventry City and Livingston FC followed. In May 2006 he worked again as an assistant for the national team; In July, the Scottish Association appointed him to succeed Rainer Bonhof as coach of the U-21 national team. In August 2007 he became training coordinator for the Bolton Wanderers and temporarily took over the first team after coach Sammy Lee had left the club in October. At this point, the team was in penultimate place in the Premier League , but had reached the group stage of the UEFA Cup , where it met FC Bayern Munich , among others . Knox was replaced after two games by Gary Megson . In July 2008, manager Paul Ince brought him to the Blackburn Rovers as assistant and trainer for the first division team .
