ANZAM

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ANZAM is the abbreviation for A ustralien , N ew Z ealand and M alaya , which comprised an informal consultation-based network that was set up in May 1948 and merged into the Anglo-Malayan Defense Agreement in October 1957 .

As part of ANZAM, Australia and New Zealand have contributed to the defense of British Malaya since 1950 . The success of communist military groups in Indochina (1954) prompted the partners to provide limited ground forces in the spring of 1955. In July 1955 an Australian battalion landed at Penang and in November of the same year a New Zealand company landed in Singapore . These forces were combined within a Commonwealth Strategic Reserve, whose headquarters were set up in Penang in December.
