Radio Skonto was founded on December 15, 1993 as a radio broadcaster to supply the Riga area. The station was launched by its founders Arvīds Mūrnieks and Ivo Baumanis as an alternative to the Latvian state radio .

On the frequency of 107.2 MHz , the broadcaster, which is moderated in Latvian , now reaches over 200,000 listeners in the broadcast area. In the Talsi area it is distributed via the 87.5 that is not approved as a band limit in Germany. The station can also be received as a stream on the Internet . The streams are provided as MP3 , Real Audio and Windows Media Player streams .

In 1996 Radio Skonto was bought out by the British consultancy "Radio Development International" together with the majority US-American Metromedia International Group. Since then, Radio Skonto has been run as a joint stock company based in Riga.

The station mainly plays music from American, European and Latvian productions, mostly easy-listening from the 80s. The schedule includes at least one Latvian song per hour. Instrumentals are also played regularly. News and journalistic contributions take a back seat to the music-heavy program. As a trademark, Radio Skonto sends a memorable station identifier (jingle) in six different variations between almost every music track.
