The Kantrida Stadium is a football stadium in the Croatian city of Rijeka . It has space for 10,600 spectators and served as the home of the HNK Rijeka football club until mid-2015 . A new building with 15,000 seats is to be built at the same location.
history
The Kantrida Stadium in Rijeka , a Croatian port city in the Kvarner Bay , was built in 1912. It opened in the same year with a friendly game between HŠK Victoria and Građanski Zagreb. Victoria used the stadium until the end of World War I before the club disbanded. In 1926 , a new tenant was found in the newly founded US Fiumana , an Italian association, whose existence ended in 1945. In 1946, HNK Rijeka was founded. The club still exists today and uses the Kantrida stadium as its home stadium. To date, HNK has been twice the Croatian cup winner and a few times second in the Croatian league behind serial champions Dinamo Zagreb .
The stadium once had a capacity of 25,000, but a few years ago UEFA security regulations reduced the capacity to the current 10,600. The stadium has been renovated three times so far, in 1925, 1951 and 1958. In addition, floodlights were installed in 1975. Over time, the name of the stadium also changed several times. This is what it was called at the time of the US Fiumane Stadio Comunale del Littorio , because at that time, shortly before and during the Second World War, parts of today's Croatia , including Rijeka, belonged to fascist Italy . Since the end of the Second World War it has been called the Kantrida Stadium.
Plans for a new building
In September 2013, the President of HNK Rijeka , Damir Mišković, announced plans for a new building. The current stadium is to be demolished and a new stadium will be built in the same place. The capacity will be around 14,000 seats. The new building is to be financed privately. The start of construction in 2014 is planned.
In July 2015, the Rujevica stadium with 8,279 seats, which is temporarily used as the venue for the HNK Rijeka, was completed on the new training center. On August 2, 2015, the first league game against NK Lokomotiva Zagreb took place there. The last game at the Kantrida stadium was the first home game of the season on July 19, 2015 against Slaven Belupo (3: 3). The match was played in the old stadium, as the pitch in Rujevica Stadium had only been laid three days earlier and it needed time to grow.
Together with a Chinese company, the association wants to develop plans for the new building. The new stadium with around 15,000 seats will include a hotel and a shopping center . The exact dates for the demolition of the Kantrida stadium or the start of construction of the new stadium have not yet been set.
