Timmy Simons at PSV Eindhoven (around 2006)

In 2005 Simons moved to PSV Eindhoven . At PSV he was team captain . He made 158 appearances (14 goals) in the Eredivisie , won the Dutch championship three times ( 2006 , 2007 , 2008 ) and was the 2009 Dutch Super Cup winner.

He played with both clubs in the UEFA Champions League and played a total of 40 games (11 Club Brugge / 29 PSV Eindhoven). Most recently he was on the ball in the Europa League in the 2009/10 season and played a total of 19 games in the UEFA Cup and Europa League (4 Club Brugge / 15 PSV Eindhoven).

For the 2010/11 season Simons moved to 1. FC Nürnberg . There he made his debut on August 15, 2010 in the game of the first round of the DFB Cup against Eintracht Trier in the starting line-up. His debut in the Bundesliga followed on August 21, 2010 on the first day of play against Borussia Mönchengladbach , also in the starting line-up. In his first season , the experienced player stabilized the defense of the young team at the position in front of the back four, which was largely able to stay out of the relegation battle and in the end achieved one of their best positions in the Bundesliga with sixth place. Simons was the only player on the team who was on the pitch every minute of the game. Also in the first half of the 2011/12 season he was used in every game of 1. FC Nürnberg. On January 10, 2012, he extended his expiring contract until 2014. During the 2013 summer break, he moved back to Club Bruges after three years at 1. FC Nürnberg . There the 36-year-old Simons, who was the oldest field player in the Bundesliga in the 2012/13 season, received a two-year contract with the option to switch to the coaching staff. He was also elected as the team captain. In 2018 he ended his active career after more than 150 league appearances for Bruges.

In the national team

Simons made his debut in the Belgian national team in 2001. A year later he took part with the national team in the World Cup in Japan and South Korea . After losing his regular seat at PSV Eindhoven, he was no longer called up. By then he had worn the Belgian national team 71 times and scored three goals. At the end of August 2010, after moving to 1. FC Nürnberg, he made his comeback in the national team in the qualifying match for the European Football Championship 2012 against Germany on September 3, 2010. Simons and his team finished third behind Germany and Turkey in qualifying. After qualifying for the European Championship, Simons lost his regular place in the national team. In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , he was in the squad in various games, but was not used in any game. In the qualification, the Belgian team was group winners. On November 13, 2016 Simons was used for the last time in the Belgian national team in an 8-1 victory over Estonia . At 39 years, eleven months and two days, he is the oldest Belgian national team player to date. With his 94 internationals, he is behind Jan Vertonghen (98) and Jan Ceulemans (96) the player with the most international appearances in the current (as of 2018) 114-year history of the national team.
