Nikolaos Anastopoulos ( Greek Νικόλαος Αναστόπουλος ; born January 22, 1958 in Athens , Greece ) is a former Greek soccer player and current soccer coach . During the late 1970s and 1980s, Anastopoulos went down as one of the most important strikers in the history of Greek football.
Club career
Nikolaos Anastopoulos began his career with the Athens club Dafni. In 1976 he moved to the first division club Panionios Athens and received a three-year contract there. At Panionios, Anastopoulos quickly made the leap into the regular formation and was even able to win the Greek Cup with the club in 1979 . In the same year he made his debut in the European Cup and scored two goals against Twente Enschede and one against IFK Gothenburg in the European Cup Winners' Cup . In 1981 Anastopoulos moved to Olympiacos Piraeus where he won the Greek championship three times over the next six years . In 1987 Anastopoulos moved to Italy for the first division club US Avellino . However, since he could no longer build on his earlier successes and his club even had to go to the second division at the end of the season, Anastopoulos returned to Greece. Until 1994 he played again for his previous clubs Panionios and Olympiakos as well as for Ionikos Nikea .
During his career, Anastopoulos completed 405 league games and scored 182 goals. He won the Greek League top scorer award four times . In 1983 he was awarded the Bronze Shoe by UEFA .
National team
During his playing career, Anastopoulos was called up to the Greek national team 73 times and scored 29 goals, which is still the best ever. In 1980 he took part in the finals of the European Championship with Greece and scored the only goal of his team at this tournament. Until the 2004 European Championship, and Karagouni's goal in the opening game against the host Portuguese, this was the only goal that Greece had achieved in a World Cup or European Championship finals.
Coaching career
At the end of his playing career, Anastopoulos took over as coach of a number of Greek clubs. After his debut at Panelefsiniakos , he took over, among others, the clubs PAS Ioannina , FC Kerkira, which he led in the first division, and Aris Thessaloniki .
