Johann Wilhelm Middendorff (born September 20, 1793 in Brechte , today the city of Dortmund ; † November 27, 1853 in Keilhau , today a district of Rudolstadt in Thuringia ) was a German Protestant theologian and educator.

Childhood and youth

Middendorff's father was the owner of a farm in Brechte (Westphalia). At the age of 10 he attended grammar school in Dortmund , where he graduated from high school at the age of 18.

Studies and Wars of Liberation

After his time in Dortmund, he attended the University of Jena and studied Protestant theology . He later moved to Berlin to hear Fichte , Neander and Schleiermacher . He took gymnastics lessons from Friedrich Ludwig Jahn and was friends with Justinus Kerner and Gustav Schwab . He was introduced by a compatriot to the war councilor Hoffmeister, the father of Froebel's first wife. In spring 1813 he joined the Lützow Freikorps in Dresden . During the war he met his future comrades-in-arms, Friedrich Froebel and Heinrich Langethal . Together with Langethal, he was one of the most loyal employees when it came to putting Fröbel's educational ideas into practice in Keilhau near Rudolstadt . After a year he was dismissed with the option of the Iron Cross and an officer post if he joined the corps. After unsuccessful reapplication, he returned to Berlin and became a tutor.

Keilhau

In 1817 Middendorff joined the Keilhau college . In 1824 Middendorff published the brochure “The celebration of the Christmas festival in Keilhau”. Two years later he married Albertine Froebel (1801–1880). She was the daughter of Johann Christian Ludwig Froebel and the niece of Friedrich Wilhelm August Froebel . The marriage had seven children, four of whom survived. His daughter Alwine Middendorff married in Keilhau in 1851 Dr. Wichard Lange . In 1831 Wilhelm Middendorff took over the management of the Keilhauer Anstalt together with Heinrich Langethal and Johannes Arnold Barop .

Late years

In 1835 Middendorff went with his sister-in-law Elise Fröbel to Willisau , Switzerland, to support Fröbel in his educational work, and in 1839 returned to Keilhau. He founded the first German kindergarten with Froebel in 1840 . In 1848 Middendorff wrote the text “The Kindergartens. The need of the times, the basis of unifying popular education ”. This document was submitted to the Frankfurt National Assembly . After Froebel's death in 1852 he continued the educational institution for kindergarten teachers in Keilhau for some time. He found support from Froebel's second wife Luise , geb. Levin.

Wilhelm Middendorff died in Keilhau on November 27, 1853.
