Rap does not need a high school diploma is the debut album by rapper Bass Sultan Hengzt . It was released in 2003 . It was also the first album to be released on the independent label Amstaff Muzx . There it appeared under the code AM001. Rap does not need a high school diploma was created in the recording studio of the German rapper Serk , whom Hengzt had met a short time before through contact with the Berlin Godsilla .

Hengzt's debut album is very different from later releases such as Berliner Schnauze . Aside from Casino , which is about the joys of gambling, the songs' content revolves around battle lyrics.

Meaning of the title

The title of the album expresses the position of the rapper Bass Sultan Hengzt in relation to the hip-hop music genre. Since representatives of the middle class in particular shaped the style of German hip-hop in the 1990s and had the greatest success, rap does not need a high school diploma at the beginning of the new millennium as a counterpoint to the old school of German rappers, shaped by the lower class .

In an interview, the artist stated that he actually wanted to use the title to express the literal message that you do not need a university entrance qualification to rap:

“I have nothing against high school graduates, everyone should do their high school graduation . I just wanted to say: You don't need a high school diploma to rap. I mean who is dictating this? I don't have a high school diploma, but I still make my money and buy a chain for 1,200 euros - and I don't work. "

production

Rap doesn't need a high school diploma was created in the studio of hip-hop musician Serk . Accordingly, numerous beats of the album were contributed by Serk. He also accompanied the recordings and mixed the songs after the recordings. As a thank you for the positive collaboration, King Orgasmus One, who is considered the discoverer of Bass Sultan Hengzt, offered Serk to publish his solo album on I Luv Money Records . Following Hengzt's first solo album, Serk's album Serkulation, was released on the independent King Orgasmus One label.

effect

Due to the lyrical harshness of the songs and the fact that Bass Sultan Hengzt's level of awareness rose steadily after his debut, which led to an increase in media attention, Rap does not need a high school diploma was indicated on January 29, 2005. That means rap does not need a high school diploma to be one of the first indexed German hip-hop albums and thus contributed to the discussion about the glorification of violence in German rap. This divided the German-speaking scene into two camps:

“The controversial title of the album gets the ball rolling that finally divides the scene and that in the media world quickly leads to a trial of strength between the old, educated bourgeois guard ( Beginner , Curse , Blumentopf , Freundeskreis ) and the new Berlin hardship (above all Bushido , Bass Sultan Hengzt and Fler) is hyped up. "

In an interview, Hengzt stated that he did not understand the indexing of the sound carrier:

"I think" Rap doesn't need a high school diploma "wasn't tough. Orgi , okay "Fuck me and shut up" was really awesome, I'll say that myself. But my album was just natural, that was street, the way we talk. "

- Bass Sultan Hengzt in 2005

On his second album Rap still does not need a high school diploma , the title of which is aimed at the Federal Testing Office for Media Harmful to Young People, which Hengzt wants to show that he cannot be banned, there are remixes for three songs from the debut album Rap does not need a high school diploma .
