Arnald Steiger

Arnald Steiger (born October 2, 1896 in Zurich ; † May 6, 1963 in Madrid ) was a Swiss Romance philologist .

Life

The son of a master builder studied Romance philology from 1915 to 1920 at the universities of Zurich , Geneva and Madrid . He received his doctorate in 1921 with Louis Gauchat in Zurich with the work Contribución al estudio del vocabulario del Corbacho (Madrid 1922) and habilitated there in 1925 with Contribución a la fonética del hispano-árabe y de los arabismos en el ibero-románico y siciliano (Madrid 1932) , 1991). From 1921 to 1933 he was a teacher at the Höhere Töchterschule in Zurich, from 1933 to 1947 full professor at the St. Gallen School of Business , at the same time associate professor until 1945 and from 1945 to 1957, when he had to resign due to embezzlement, full professor in Zurich . From 1961 he taught as an associate professor at the University of Madrid . Together with Jakob Jud he founded the magazine Vox Romanica in 1936 and edited it from 1952 to 1963 under sole responsibility.

Steiger was the actual founder of Hispanic studies in Zurich and from 1940 to 1957 he was also a promoter of Lusitan studies . From 1948 to 1958 he was also head of the military science department at ETH Zurich . In addition to his university career, he was a general staff officer from 1931 and commander of Mountain Brigade 12 from 1946 to 1954.
