Georg Bossong

Georg Bossong (born May 28, 1948 in Kirchheimbolanden ) is a German Romance scholar and linguist .

Georg Bossong graduated from high school in 1967. From 1967 to 1968 he studied German and Romance studies at the University of Mainz , from 1969 to 1971 at the University of Tübingen German, Romance studies, general and comparative linguistics, Arabic and Persian and from 1971 to 1975 in Heidelberg (German, Romance studies, general and comparative linguistics , Islamic Studies, Sinology and Indology ). In 1973 he passed the state examination in Heidelberg and received his doctorate there in 1976. His habilitation took place in Heidelberg in 1977 and the double venia legendi for Romance Philology and General Linguistics.

From 1975 to 1981 Bossong lived in Paris. There he studied Caucasian and Amerindian languages at the Institut national des langues et civilizations orientales as well as general linguistics and Iranian studies at the École pratique des hautes études . From 1977 to 1981 he taught as a private lecturer at the University of Heidelberg. At the Universities of Munich (1981–1989) and Mannheim (1989–1994) he taught as a professor of Romance studies. From 1994 until his retirement in 2013, Bossong taught as the successor to Gerold Hilty as a full professor of Romance studies at the University of Zurich .

His main research interests include language typology and universality research , the Semitic-Romance language and cultural contacts on the Iberian Peninsula, the history of linguistics, language politics and sociolinguistics , the reconstruction of prehistoric language contacts, especially Basque-Iberoromaniac, language and literature, especially poetry .
