Gerold Hilty

Gerold Hilty (born August 12, 1927 in Samedan ; † December 6, 2014 in Oberrieden ) was a Swiss Romance studies , Hispanic , Medievalist and linguist .

Life

Gerold Hilty studied in Zurich (with Jakob Jud , Arnald Steiger , Theophil Spoerri , Emil Staiger , Manu Leumann ) and Madrid (with Ramón Menéndez Pidal , Dámaso Alonso , Rafael Lapesa , Emilio García Gómez). During his student days he joined the Swiss Zofingerverein . He received his doctorate in Zurich in 1953 with El libro conplido en los iudizios de las estrellas (Madrid 1954). He was an assistant at the Romance Seminary in Zurich, then a high school teacher in St. Gallen. An ongoing habilitation thesis on the Discours indirect libre did not materialize because of the early appointment to the chair of his teacher Arnald Steiger. Hilty was a full professor of Romance philology (French and Spanish linguistics) at the University of Zurich from 1959 to 1993 (also rector from 1980 to 1982). Georg Bossong was his successor in Zurich . Hilty was editor of the magazine Vox Romanica from 1963 to 1991 . From 1978 to 1983 Hilty was in the Swiss Army Commander of Reduit Brigade 22 .

He was the younger brother of the writer and publicist Hans Rudolf Hilty .
