Ladislav Zgusta
Ladislav Zgusta (born March 20, 1924 in Libochovice , † April 27, 2007 in Urbana , Illinois) was a Czech linguist , Indo-Europeanist , classical philologist , name researcher and lexicographer with US citizenship.
Life
Zgusta studied Ancient Languages, Indology and Comparative Indo-European Linguistics at the Universities of Prague and Brno . From 1951 to 1967 he worked at the Prague Academy of Sciences . From 1968 to 1970 he taught comparative linguistics at the University of Brno. In 1970 he fled to the USA via India. There he briefly taught at Cornell University , Ithaca, NY, and then went to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1971 , where he worked at the Center for Advanced Studies until 1995, since 1987 as its director. The 1971 Manual of Lexicography, prepared in Czechoslovakia , was an epoch-making book in dictionary research that made it known worldwide.
In 1992 Zgusta was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
