After the school closed in 1938, the couple first lived in Greece, Renée's homeland, and then emigrated to the USA in 1939, where Henry Kahane (after starting in Los Angeles) was professor (for Italian and Italian) from 1941 until his retirement in 1971 Spanish, from 1963 for linguistics) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (later also at the Center for Advanced Studies). Kahane was Associate Editor of Romance Philology and President of the Linguistic Society of America in 1984. Both Kahanes received honorary doctorates from the University of Illinois in 1977 and from FU Berlin in 1988 . In 1989, Henry Kahane was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
