Renée Kahane

Renée Kahane (born December 9, 1907 in Argostolion as Renée Toole ; † December 10, 2002 in Chicago ) was a Greek-Austrian Romance studies and linguist with US citizenship.

life and work

Renée Toole, daughter of an Irish wine merchant and a Greek woman, grew up on the island of Kephalonia. In 1925 she went to Leipzig and Berlin to study Romance languages. In 1931 she married Heinrich Kahane . At the beginning of 1934 Renée Kahane received her doctorate from Ernst Gamillscheg in Berlin on studies of the history of words: "toupin" and "bronze" (Jena / Leipzig 1934). She went to Florence with her husband, who had been expelled from Germany because of his Jewish descent, and worked there with him at the rural school center in Florence until 1938 . After the school closed, they first went to Greece before emigrating to the USA in 1939, where Henry Kahane was professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (later also at the Center for Advanced Studies) from 1941 until his retirement in 1971 . Renée Kahane and Henry Kahane published numerous research results together throughout their lives.
