Alfonso Martínez de Toledo

Alfonso Martínez de Toledo (* 1398 in Toledo , † 1470 in Talavera de la Reina ) was a Spanish writer , Canon of Toledo and Archpriest of Talavera.

Life

Martínez was chaplain to King John II of Castile . He wrote about the life of Saints Isidore and Ildefons , but his main work was Corbacho o reprobación del amor mundano , published in 1495. Based on Italian sources, it is an attack on worldly love, combining popular language with satirical remarks about contemporary customs. It is one of the earliest masterpieces in Spanish literature and was very successful at the time.
