Words and things

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Words and Things is a representative field of research for language and subject research, which presented its results for the first time in a cultural-historical journal of the same name ( Heidelberg 1909 ff.).

She originally criticized the “atomism” of the young grammarians, which was entirely focused on the sounds, and wanted to integrate linguistics into the “whole” of cultural studies . As a result, she dealt with the investigation of the mutual relationship between words and the objects and facts they designate. The "words-and-thing" movement was linked to the linguists Rudolf Meringer , Wilhelm Meyer-Lübke and Hugo Schuchardt , along with others .

Typical results of this research direction are the Language Atlas of German-speaking Switzerland (SDS) and - the name says it all - the Language and Subject Atlas of Italy and Southern Switzerland (AIS).
