Origin and meaning

The name was derived from Old High German hlût, lût "loud, audible, known, famous" and wig "fight, argument, war, battle, battle". The first part of the name not only produced New High German aloud , but is also originally related to the Greek κλέος ( kléos "fame"), which was also used in names such as Herakles or Cleopatra .

The earliest known bearer of the name was the Merovingian Clovis I (around 466-511), who is considered the founder of the Franconian Empire and its first Christian king.
