August Ludwig (born July 9, 1867 in Hochdorf near Blankenhain ; † July 5, 1951 in Jena ) was a German Protestant pastor , bee researcher and dialect poet.

Life

Ludwig grew up in Hochdorf and graduated from high school in Weimar . He then studied Protestant theology and became vicar of the Thuringian Evangelical Church . During his studies in 1887 he became a member of the St. Pauli Jena singers . After his ordination he became a pastor in Taubach near Weimar. In addition to his pastoral work, he was interested in the Ilm-Thuringian dialect, which he listened to people on his parish visits. He let himself be told many anecdotes and "little snarlers" from his fellow citizens and published them for the first time in 1922 in the volume "Wie die Alten sungen".

Ludwig also became known through his beekeeping activities . In order to pursue it more intensively, he retired at the age of 49. In 1916, Ludwig was allowed to set up a university apiary with 40 to 50 colonies in the Grießbach'schen Garten in Jena . There he held lectures on apiculture for students for 30 years, i.e. 60 semesters . In addition, there were his annual Whitsun and summer courses, in which he often taught up to 300 beekeepers from all over Germany. The beekeepers were trained in theory and practice at the apiary. In 1925, after Gerstung's death, he took over the editorial management of " German Beekeeping in Theory and Practice ".

Ludwig was married to Marie Sonnebrodt (1869–1914) for the first time. The two had eight sons. After the early death of his wife, Ludwig probably married her younger sister, Anna Berta Sonnebrodt (1870–1945).
