Ludwig Weber (theologian)

Friedrich Wilhelm Karl Ludwig Weber (born April 2, 1846 in Schwelm ; † January 29, 1922 in Bonn ) was a German Protestant theologian and social reformer . He was a pastor in Mönchengladbach .

Life

Ludwig Weber, son of the District Court Councilor Carl Weber and his wife Emilie, was awarded a Lic. Theol in Bonn, Berlin and Erlangen in 1868 after studying in Bonn . PhD. He worked as a senior helper in the Evangelical Johannesstift Berlin , as an assistant preacher in Iserlohn and as a pastor in Dellwig . In 1881 he came to Mönchengladbach as a pastor, where he stayed until his retirement in 1914. His only son Hans Emil Weber (1882–1950) became professor of theology in Bonn.

Weber demanded, according to his motto "If a lot is given, a lot is demanded of him", the responsibility of the haves towards the working class. Influenced by the socio-political ideas of Victor Aimé Huber , Weber advocated cooperative self-help, the right to strike, employee participation, union organization and worker participation. Together with Adolf Stoecker he initiated the founding of numerous Protestant workers 'associations , the first in Essen in 1883. Among other things, he founded the Protestant workers' association in Mönchen-Gladbach and the association for Christian popular education in 1889. He was also involved in the founding of the Evangelical Social Congress in 1890 and the Free Church Social Conference in 1897. In 1899 he signed the call to found the German-Evangelical Women's Association . He developed his main effect since 1898 as chairman of the general association of Protestant workers' associations.

The city of Mönchengladbach has named a street after him.
